Happy Wednesday! Yesterday, I did something I haven’t done in a very, very (I could probably add multiple more very’s, but I won’t at the sake of being cheesy) long time. Look what made an appearance—

Yep…you guessed it! Running gear! While I only made in 1.67 miles in a time I’d rather not post, I did it. Running less than three months after surgery with absolutely no pain. It’s a start and I’ve obviously got a long ways to go, but you have to start somewhere, right? The more I look at that picture, the lime green Under Armor shorts might be a little much. You can’t miss me.

Now it’s time for.

What  I Ate Wednesday…

Peas and Crayons

Breakfast:

Peanut Butter Energy Bites and Yogurt

Lunch:

Leftover Cajun Chicken Alfredo from Red Lobster

Dinner:

Baked Cheesy Chicken and Broccoli Pasta (yes, this is more like a What I ate Sunday post!)

Snacks:

Chocolate shake

Wheat pita with Hummus and Peppers

That might be a slight exaggeration, but I feel like this I’ve been living in doctor’s offices between strep, mono tests and a follow-up appointment for my foot. Despite the fact I spent a heck of a lot of time sitting around in waiting rooms, it’s been all good news!

  • antibiotics for strep.
  • no mono.
  • PRN on the foot!!

I’m cleared and encouraged to do absolutely anything I feel like I can handle on my foot. I had a feeling this is how it would turn out today. I was confident, so confident that I actually walked into a foot and ankle surgeon’s office wearing a pair of heels. I contemplated changing my shoes before I went to the visit, but then I figured they don’t hurt, I’m not sore, so I’ve got nothing to hide. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything wrong. I was just showing the doctor how awesome of a job he did. :)

I managed to get some shopping in at Urban Outfitters before the appointment. Urban Outfitters was having an awesome sale. Take an additional 50 percent all sale merchandise. I managed to get a purse and two shirts for just $20. Not a bad deal at all! Plus, lunch at the Pita Pit taking advantage of a Groupon I had purchased months ago.

Now it’s off to do some more ice skating. I am so much more comfortable with the idea of ice skating since I no longer have any more follow up appointments for my foot…unless of course I have a problem and feel the need to make one.

Can you believe it is almost the new year? 2011 flew by so quickly. Since I’m not well enough to be trying out any new exercises for my normal Tryin’ It Out Thursdays, I’ve seen year in review posts on a few other blogs and have decided to give it a try. Although, I am very happy to report that my mono test came back negative! Overall, I’d say 2011 was an awesome year. Here it goes:

Went to a ton of sporting events…I absolutely love Pittsburgh sports!!

Visited the Pittsburgh Zoo…I adore penguins!

Moved into my first home! (I closed at the end of 2010 and moved in January 2011)

Went ice skating for the first time in a very long time:

Decided to complete a second Master’s degree (M.S. Exercise Science and Health Promotion):

Strained my hamstring attempting to punt a football (looks like I won’t be making the Steelers anytime soon, ha) and found myself in PT:

Had foot surgery:

Started baking a lot (shocking, since I hated it up until a few months ago):

Held my first ever party at my house:

And, of course, started this blog! I’m excited to be able to share my life, thoughts, ideas, baking attempts and fitness knowledge with all of you! Thanks for reading!

What stands out in your 2011?

I’m not one to take medicine; I never have been. Unless I am in excruciating pain, I stay far way from medications. But in this case, antibiotics are heaven sent! I’ve only taken one day worth of pills and have noticed an extreme difference. I slept more last night than I did in the past week combined, have been extremely productive working (hello, long weekend again perhaps!) and my voice is starting to return. Although, I still haven’t gotten word back on the mono test. eek!

I’ve been doing a lot of writing this morning about fitness goals for 2012 and New Year’s resolutions, often related to health and fitness, that fail, which got me thinking. I should probably decide on some sort of goal or resolution, that is obtainable, but not too easy. It actually only took me about two minutes to come up with a goal that is obtainable, not too easy and I’ll be able to say I’ve accomplished something I’ve always wanted to do.

I’ve decided I want to run a 5k (I haven’t really looked up any 5ks around here, but one that comes to mind is the Pittsburgh Marathon’s 5K although it’s not until May). The 5k is the day after my 27th birthday and could be an interesting present to myself. It’s a long ways off and I know I won’t need that much training to run a 5k, so I’ll probably need to find some others along the way, but I know I can do this.

I’ll essentially be going from “couch to 5k” do to nearly three years plagued with injuries and a couple of foot surgeries. Needless to say, I will be extremely cautious. I am by no means a natural-born runner. I’m more of an accident-prone runner and will be doing everything in my power to avoid more injuries. It’s bad when they know your name at the orthopaedic doctor’s office when you sign-in!

All I need to do now is wait for my surgeon to tell me my foot is all healed. I’m fairly confident, in my very non-medical opinion, that I’m doing great, but I’ll let him be the judge of that. I was supposed to have an appointment today, but I pushed it back to Friday do to strep. So, we shall see!

What are your New Year’s resolutions, if any?

Runners, how did you get motivated to run your first race?

Five weeks ago today at precisely this time — well maybe not precisely this time I probably didn’t even know what time it was courtesy of my “happy medicine.” — I was laughing, having a good ole time (considering I was in an OR I was, seriously!) and the next thing I knew I woke up with a very large bandage on my foot. Five weeks later, I’m feeling fabulous! (well, not fabulous enough to do anything crazy, but I can wear regular shoes with ease and have even purchased a pair of heel — that I’m saving for when I am completely pain free). Now, that’s progress (in my book anyways).

You can hardly even see the incision!

don't mind my super dry skin. I apply lotion like crazy and nothing helps!

Today’s workout:

I gave this medicine ball workout from Women’s Health a try and am feeling pretty good so far:

A more exciting sidenote: I got an invite from Pinterest!

Another quick update: I was finally able to score some awesome deals at LOFT.com :)

I’m at the doctor’s office again. Blogging from a waiting room may be one of the weirdest places to blog from. Everyone in the waiting room is glued to the TV watching whatever soap opera is currently on! I feel like I am making too much noise by typing. I’ve also had a lady ask me when I was graduating High School…I always thought I looked young; but high school seems a bit excessive. Then again, when I had my surgery I had multiple nurses try to yell at my for signing consent forms because they thought I was 16 yrs old. Meanwhile, I probably recited by DOB at least a dozen times that day…I was born in 1985, not 1995!!!!

Do you look young for your age? How old do people normally think you are?

Anyways back to waiting! I cannot wait to see what my foot looks like under these bandages this time. Hopefully better than last time! It’s like unwrapping a very odd present on Christmas morning. I’ll be very excited if I walk out of this office wearing two matching shoes :)

They are calling my name!

Here’s a photo a snapped really quickly…I always have a fear of someone coming in a room when I am taking an odd picture. If I ever get busted, I plan on saying I’m taking a picture for my very curious sister (who is an RN). I think that should get me out of an awkward situation. What do you think?

And the good news is… I walked out of the office wearing my own shoes…no more big, bulky boot!

And then I was pleasantly surprised to come home and find out that I have been hired by a local community college to be an instructor in the community education department!

Have your ever been busted taking an awkward picture for the sake of blogging?

I’m starting to get a little impatient sitting still — it’s been two weeks and two days since my surgery. While I realize sitting still and resting is important to recovery. I’ve started to become a little more active — it’s important for my sanity; sitting on the couch all day long is boring and honestly makes me want to go to bed extremely early. So I comprised my own post-surgery mini-workout plan. Very refreshing!

  • Crunches (didn’t count how many, just as many as I could fit in during two songs on my iPod)
  • 3 sets of eight repetitions- cross-legged push-ups (pretty challenging to balance a walking boot on your opposite leg!)
  • 3 sets of eight repetitions — bicep curls with five pound weights — while seated.
  • 3 sets of eight repetitions — triceps extensions with five pound weights — while seated.
For some light stretching, I resorted back to some old stretches from a hamstring injury from earlier this year.

It hasn’t even been two weeks since I’ve had what appears to be very successful foot surgery. I’ve been allowed to place weight on my foot already (which is a week earlier than when I had the same exact surgery on the other foot a year and a half ago). I’m making progress and eager to get moving. It’s been a long two and a half years filled with injuries and surgeries — stress fractures, genetically defective feet and hamstring injuries (I will never punt a football again!). I’m eager to do anything injury free. I’m hoping to get into some running once this is all said and done (maybe I’ll aim for some 5ks). With two (almost in a few months), functional feet, I should be good to go. In the mean time, here are some things I’ve learned about staying injury free and recovering from injuries:

  • Listen to your doctors (believe it or not, I don’t know everything!).
  • Walking boots/casts only work if you actually keep it on your foot.
  • A good pair of running shoes are key.
  • Never overdo-it. The 10 percent rule should never be broken!
  • No pain, no gain isn’t always true. If you are in severe pain, stop!
  • Stretching tight muscles is extremely important.
  • Swimming just might be the safest activity for me (I haven’t found a way to injure myself in a pool yet!)

I got my cast off!!! Only one more week until I can ditch my crutches and a couple more weeks until I can lose this beautiful, ever-so-fashionable boot. Below are some pictures. If you have a weak stomach, I’d recommend checking out another post :) .

Happy Halloween! This blog may just be the result of my boredom as a recover from foot surgery. I had a tarsal coalition resection on Tuesday (10/25) and am very bored. I’m used to working from home, but the crutches and the very heavy cast are making for very long and boring days. Thus far, I’ve created a blog and carved a pumpkin — I haven’t carved a pumpkin in years. I’m still deciding what angle to take on this blog. I’m thinking a blog packed full of fun workout tips, nutrition tips, a little sports and some fitness fashion. I might just tackle the issue of recovering from injury and getting back into the mode of exercising during and after recovery. Could be interesting.

Note my huge and very heavy cast to your left.
