Hi, I’m Katie! I blog over at Katie Moves (http://katiemoves.wordpress.com). I’m a 23-year-old fitness enthusiast living in South Central Pennsylvania. I was a Health and Physical Education major and have a passion for all things fitness. I’m so excited to do a guest post for Michelle! (We also share a love for Pittsburgh sports and are Sweat Pink Ambassadors!)

I am by no means a natural runner or endurance athlete. I have, however, played sports that involved running my entire life. Of course, they also involved a stick, ball, hoop, or goal. Now that kind of coordination is what I was made for. Running for miles? Biking for miles? Not so much.  I played team sports from the time I was very young and throughout high school.

After high school, I went on to play field hockey at a Division II college in my home state of Pennsylvania. These years were the best times of my life! My team was my family and my home-away-from-home. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and that it did. Those four years of college flew by faster than I could have ever expected. I can still remember being dropped off for the first day of pre-season and then before I knew it, it was our Senior Day.

When it was all over and we finished up our fall semester I didn’t notice hockey being over right away. We were all so used to the season ending and having some time off before the spring that it was pretty much a normal feeling…usually one of relief to have that extra time for studying and projects. Coming back for the spring semester was weird when I figured out I had all that time on my hands. I went to the gym but now working out just to stay “fit” wasn’t really fun for me. I did it because I know that staying active is healthy, but it wasn’t fun for me at the time. I tried to mix things up and did some new classes, but being an athlete all my life and then suddenly not competing was a foreign concept for me.  It was easy to even blow off the gym because I never felt like it mattered. “Who cares if I don’t lift or run today, I’m not letting a teammate down anymore, its all on me,” were some of the thoughts that went through my head. For the next 6 months I was at a loss for what to do to make fitness fun for me again.

My boyfriend who I had been dating for almost a year had always been very into running and cycling. He had 2 bikes (road and triathlon bike), an indoor trainer, and trained that way for the entire time I knew him. He had even done a few duathlons  (run, bike, run) the summer before we met. That summer after field hockey ended his Dad got a new road bike, meaning there was an extra bike for me to be able to try riding. It was love at first ride! By the end of the summer I signed up for my first duathlon last October and I was absolutely hooked! The biking was really fun for me and the rush of the wind in your face was totally addicting. The running part was hard for me- yes, but this was a new challenge! One I really needed to motivate me and keep me interested. Running that type of distance in one race was something I never thought I would be able to do before- and then there I was finishing AND winning my age group! This spring I’ve already participated in two more races- and I’m already looking for more to do!

My challenge to all of you who are feeling bored or unmotivated is to find a race- maybe an Adventure Race, Tough Mudder, or a Triathlon/Duathlon. Find something to challenge and inspire you to work harder! Sometimes a new goal is all you need, and you might just be surprised by yourself. The next challenge for myself is starting to swim again, and signing up for a triathlon hopefully by the end of the summer!

Hot and Sweaty

Well…I really got my workout on yesterday! Hot yoga followed by a run (I’m still not sure what I was thinking), but I did it! I really enjoyed yoga (in a studio setting, I’ve done it in a gym before). Although, I’ve come to realize I am nowhere near as flexible as I used to be! Tonight, I’ll be taking the basics class. Last night, my friend (who convinced me to sign-up) and I opted for an all levels class and hid in the back of the room!

I rewarded myself with a trip to Whole Foods, where I’m pretty sure my grossness turned some heads! I tend to avoid that place. Why? I’m normally a coupon-using, bargain hunter when it comes to grocery shopping, but when I go in there I seem to lose all control and buy anything I see that look good…like the time I spent $5 on a microscopic muffin in the baked goods section, because it looked good. Actually, I didn’t know the price til I got to the register. I couldn’t figure what made my bill so high since I had only purchased a handful of granola bars and some mac and cheese. Note to self: never buy anything in there again without a price tag on it! I did get my foodie pen pal shopping done though!

Project get back to running (without injuring myself) is coming along quite nicely. The one thing I have found to help me through runs is that I pretty much need my iPod. I seem to move so much quicker and I am so much more motivated to run when I have some good and sometimes crazy music to listen to. My mentality is just keeping running until the song is over. With this mindset, I feel like I can go a lot further. Sometimes I want to keep going to see what the next song on my list is.

Here is my current playlist. It’s fun, current, old and maybe even a little bit off the wall.

  1. “Life is a Highway” Rascal Flatts
  2. “Walk This Way” Aerosmith
  3. “Harder to Breath” Maroon 5
  4. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” Michael Jackson
  5. “It’s Tricky” Run DMC
  6. “Moves Like Jagger” Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera
  7. “Just the Way You Are” Bruno Mars
  8. “Born This Way” Lady GaGa
  9. “Too Close” Next
  10. “All For You” Sister Hazel

What’s the most random song on your playlist?

What do you do to keep yourself motivated to run — or whatever it is that you do to stay in shape?

Happy Wednesday! Yesterday, I did something I haven’t done in a very, very (I could probably add multiple more very’s, but I won’t at the sake of being cheesy) long time. Look what made an appearance—

Yep…you guessed it! Running gear! While I only made in 1.67 miles in a time I’d rather not post, I did it. Running less than three months after surgery with absolutely no pain. It’s a start and I’ve obviously got a long ways to go, but you have to start somewhere, right? The more I look at that picture, the lime green Under Armor shorts might be a little much. You can’t miss me.

Now it’s time for.

What  I Ate Wednesday…

Peas and Crayons

Breakfast:

Peanut Butter Energy Bites and Yogurt

Lunch:

Leftover Cajun Chicken Alfredo from Red Lobster

Dinner:

Baked Cheesy Chicken and Broccoli Pasta (yes, this is more like a What I ate Sunday post!)

Snacks:

Chocolate shake

Wheat pita with Hummus and Peppers

I’m not one to take medicine; I never have been. Unless I am in excruciating pain, I stay far way from medications. But in this case, antibiotics are heaven sent! I’ve only taken one day worth of pills and have noticed an extreme difference. I slept more last night than I did in the past week combined, have been extremely productive working (hello, long weekend again perhaps!) and my voice is starting to return. Although, I still haven’t gotten word back on the mono test. eek!

I’ve been doing a lot of writing this morning about fitness goals for 2012 and New Year’s resolutions, often related to health and fitness, that fail, which got me thinking. I should probably decide on some sort of goal or resolution, that is obtainable, but not too easy. It actually only took me about two minutes to come up with a goal that is obtainable, not too easy and I’ll be able to say I’ve accomplished something I’ve always wanted to do.

I’ve decided I want to run a 5k (I haven’t really looked up any 5ks around here, but one that comes to mind is the Pittsburgh Marathon’s 5K although it’s not until May). The 5k is the day after my 27th birthday and could be an interesting present to myself. It’s a long ways off and I know I won’t need that much training to run a 5k, so I’ll probably need to find some others along the way, but I know I can do this.

I’ll essentially be going from “couch to 5k” do to nearly three years plagued with injuries and a couple of foot surgeries. Needless to say, I will be extremely cautious. I am by no means a natural-born runner. I’m more of an accident-prone runner and will be doing everything in my power to avoid more injuries. It’s bad when they know your name at the orthopaedic doctor’s office when you sign-in!

All I need to do now is wait for my surgeon to tell me my foot is all healed. I’m fairly confident, in my very non-medical opinion, that I’m doing great, but I’ll let him be the judge of that. I was supposed to have an appointment today, but I pushed it back to Friday do to strep. So, we shall see!

What are your New Year’s resolutions, if any?

Runners, how did you get motivated to run your first race?

I love this! I can’t decide which little saying I like most! For right now, I’m going with run towards that which matters most and run away from that which matters least.

What’s your favorite?
